June is Here.
“Blah that’s disgusting,” exclaimed my wife from her hospital bed. Our Daughter, June, was minutes away from entering the world. My job was to keep a cold glass of ginger ale ready in case my wife wanted some.
I failed. I had one job, and I got it wrong.
She asked for a drink, and in a panic I spun around and grabbed the closest cup I could find. Unfortunately, it was my old drink from three hours ago. The fresh glass of ginger ale I’d recently prepared wasn’t within reach.
Didn’t matter. My superhero wife performed flawlessly, and our beautiful daughter was born at 3:22 am on December 23rd. And thankfully, unlike my son, June was born in the hospital under the care of trained professionals.
Sales Hack: Have a Full Drink in Hand Before a Demo
In the past, we have talked about the importance of using silence during a sales call. Forcing yourself to take a drink is another way of inserting silence, while also helping to take control of the call.
Keeping your throat lubricated will also improve your speech and ensure you come across excited and help the prospect focus on what you are saying, instead of how you are saying it.
When preparing for a call, the first thing I always do is check to make sure I have a full drink ready to go. This way I don’t have to panic and drink something old, or worse, have no drink at all when it is needed.
Bonus Hack: Gargle your drink for about five seconds right before your demo. You’ll find this improves your speech tremendously, especially if the drink is cold water.
